Our Zanzibar Natural Dye Maxi Kaftan is a masterpiece of Rajasthan’s centuries-old textile tradition—a dramatic graphic composition of deep black, warm madder red and natural cream, created entirely by hand using natural dyes and traditional wooden block printing.

Jean Marie sought out the master printer responsible for this extraordinary fabric specifically for his command of natural color. He works within a community of printers in Rajasthan renowned for generations for its knowledge of natural dyes and block printing, and in Jean Marie’s estimation, he is quite simply the best. His work preserves a sophisticated textile tradition at a time when the speed and economy of synthetic dyes have led many printers away from these older methods.

Natural dyeing costs considerably more for us to produce, but the difference is unmistakable. These colors possess a depth and complexity that give the fabric its remarkable character. The earthy red, dense iron black and softened natural cream are rooted in the historic palette of this region, where dyers traditionally developed color from materials such as madder, harda and iron.

The long silhouette makes the graphic pattern particularly powerful. Strong zigzags travel rhythmically down the length of the dress before meeting the intricate geometric border at the hem. The scale and repetition feel strikingly modern, yet the visual language belongs to a much older tradition of bold geometric printing in Rajasthan. It is this juxtaposition that Jean Marie loves: an ancient textile technique transformed into something wonderfully contemporary.

For centuries, specialist printing families in this region have passed their knowledge of natural color and block printing from one generation to another. The process is slow and highly skilled. Cotton is carefully prepared before printing, colors are mixed and developed according to traditional recipes, and carved wooden blocks are repeatedly positioned by hand across the cloth. Printing, drying, washing and developing the colors can require numerous stages before the textile reveals its final character.

The subtle variations inherent in this process are part of its beauty. Natural dyes respond to the preparation of the cloth, water, climate and the hand of the dyer rather than producing the mechanical uniformity of industrial color. The result is a textile with extraordinary nuance, depth and individuality.

There is also a more thoughtful approach to making cloth this way. Hand block printing depends upon human skill rather than enormous industrial printing runs, while natural dyes continue methods that long predate modern synthetic color. By choosing this considerably more costly process, we are supporting the specialist artisans who still possess this increasingly uncommon knowledge and commissioning textiles made at a human scale.
