Turquoise, Orange Spiny Oyster, and Heishi Santo Domingo Necklace
Our Turquoise, Orange Spiny Oyster & Heishi Santo Domingo Necklace is a beautiful expression of color, tradition, and the enduring artistry of the Santo Domingo (Kewa) Pueblo. Handcrafted exclusively for our collection by a gifted female Santo Domingo artisan, this necklace was specially commissioned through the close relationship this artisan shares with our founder, Jean Marie. Together they carefully envisioned a piece that would capture the warmth of the Southwest, pairing brilliant turquoise with vibrant orange spiny oyster in a design that feels both timeless and effortlessly wearable.
For generations, the Santo Domingo people have been celebrated as masters of heishi, one of the oldest jewelry-making traditions in North America. The process is incredibly labor-intensive, with every tiny bead individually cut, drilled, shaped, and polished before being carefully strung by hand. This necklace showcases that remarkable heritage through beautifully balanced strands of heishi accented with vivid turquoise, a stone treasured for centuries as a symbol of protection, harmony, and good fortune. The addition of orange spiny oyster shell, gathered from the warm waters of the Sea of Cortez, brings rich sunset tones that have long been cherished in Southwestern jewelry for their natural beauty and vibrant energy.
More than a necklace, this is a story of collaboration, heritage, and tradition carried forward by skilled hands. Commissioned exclusively for our collection, it honors generations of Santo Domingo craftsmanship while celebrating the beauty of natural turquoise, vibrant orange spiny oyster, and handcrafted heishi. It is a wearable work of art that connects the past with the present, a timeless treasure created to be worn, admired, and passed down for generations.
