Navajo Sterling Silver and Purple Spiny Oyster Dragonfly

Sale price$795.00

Our Silver and Purple Spiny Oyster Dragonfly Navajo Pendant is a graceful expression of transformation, movement, and Southwestern artistry. Handcrafted in sterling silver, this striking dragonfly design features richly textured tufa cast details that give the piece an organic, sculptural presence. At its center rests a vibrant purple spiny oyster stone, glowing with deep plum tones that add warmth and elegance. Suspended from a sleek black leather cord, the pendant feels both delicate and powerful, capturing the spirit of nature through the hands of a skilled Navajo artisan.

The dragonfly holds deep symbolic meaning across many Native cultures, often representing change, adaptability, and the beauty of transformation. As a creature that moves between water and air, it is seen as a messenger of growth and renewal, reminding us to embrace life’s transitions with grace. In Navajo artistry, forms inspired by nature reflect harmony with the world around us, making the dragonfly a meaningful and uplifting symbol to wear.

The purple spiny oyster shell at the center carries its own rich history. Found in the warm waters of the Sea of Cortez along the coast of Mexico, spiny oyster has been treasured and traded by Indigenous peoples of the Southwest for centuries. Its vibrant colors and rarity made it highly valued for adornment and ceremonial use. Purple spiny oyster, is the rarest colour as it represents the oldest phase in the shell's life, in particular, it is admired for its deep, saturated tones that range from berry to wine hues, making each stone completely unique. The combination of this rare shell with sterling silver creates a beautiful connection between ocean and desert traditions.

What makes this pendant especially special is that it is tufa cast, not stamped, using one of the oldest silversmithing techniques in the Southwest. Molten silver is poured into a hand-carved volcanic stone mold, creating one-of-a-kind textures and natural patterns that cannot be replicated. Jean Marie personally commissioned this piece from our favourite Navajo artisan. To her, this pendant tells a story of transformation, artistry, and connection, making it far more than jewelry, but a wearable piece of living tradition.
