Rare Red Spiny Oyster and Heishi Santo Domingo Necklace

Sale price$495.00

Our Red Spiny Oyster Santo Domingo Necklace is a truly extraordinary piece, not only because of the remarkable craftsmanship behind it, but because of the unusually rich red tones found throughout the spiny oyster itself. While many spiny oyster pieces lean toward bright orange, these shells veer deeply into crimson and red, a far rarer and more sought-after coloration that collectors and longtime admirers of Southwestern jewelry immediately recognize as special. The color almost glows against the skin, carrying the warmth of desert sunsets and the vibrancy of living coral.

Handcrafted by a female Santo Domingo (Kewa) Pueblo artisan whom Jean Marie knows personally, this necklace carries a story far deeper than adornment alone. Over the years, Jean Marie has visited the artisan’s home, met her family, and developed a meaningful relationship rooted in admiration for the generations of artistry passed down within Santo Domingo Pueblo. Pieces like this are not factory-made creations, but the result of patience, tradition, and human connection.

Every individual bead has been painstakingly hand-cut, shaped, drilled, and polished by hand, a labor-intensive process that Santo Domingo artisans are celebrated for. The graduated design draws the eye naturally toward the striking center drop, where the deeper red spiny oyster creates a bold and elegant focal point. The necklace is beautifully finished at the ends with delicate heishi shell beads, a subtle detail that speaks to the refinement and authenticity of traditional Santo Domingo jewelry-making. The organic variation in the shell gives the necklace movement and life, ensuring no two pieces could ever be exactly alike.

Spiny oyster shell has been treasured in the Southwest for centuries and was historically traded from the Sea of Cortez across vast desert trade routes. Revered by Native peoples for its connection to vitality, water, protection, and life force, it remains one of the most iconic materials in Southwestern jewelry. Yet pieces with this level of saturated red coloration have become increasingly difficult to find today.

Jean Marie personally commissioned this necklace because she was captivated by the rarity of the color and the artistry behind it. To her, this piece feels deeply alive, filled with warmth, heritage, and the unmistakable beauty that only true hand craftsmanship can bring.
