Navajo Silver and Rare Gaspeite Necklace Hand Made

Sale price$895.00

Our Navajo Silver and Rare Gaspeite Necklace is a study in beautiful contrasts: an exceptionally rare, earthy stone presented within the clean geometry of a completely handmade silver chain. Created by a skilled Navajo artisan, the necklace centers upon a substantial oval gaspeite cabochon whose extraordinary apple and lime-green tones are crossed by caramel, ochre, and brown matrix. Rather than distracting from the stone, the restrained silver setting allows its unusual natural pattern to become the focal point—almost like a miniature landscape framed in silver.

Gaspeite is a genuinely rare nickel-carbonate mineral, first identified on Québec’s Gaspé Peninsula and later found in notable deposits in Western Australia. Mineralogical references describe it as rare and note its characteristic apple-to-lime green coloration; specimens and quality lapidary material are comparatively uncommon. This scarcity is precisely why older gaspeite has become so treasured in Southwestern jewelry. Material of the size, color, and character needed for a commanding cabochon such as this is increasingly difficult to encounter, making each beautiful example worth preserving rather than something that can simply be reordered or reproduced.

The silverwork is equally important to the story. Every elongated link has been formed and assembled by hand by the Navajo artisan, creating a chain with subtle evidence of its maker rather than machine-made uniformity. Its elongated links also make the necklace wonderfully versatile: the clasp can be positioned along the chain so the piece may be worn higher at choker length or allowed to fall longer against the chest. That adaptability gives a traditional handmade piece an unexpectedly modern sophistication.

Jean Marie was immediately drawn to the necklace because it embodies what she loves about patronizing Native artisans: extraordinary materials elevated by the individuality of the human hand. She particularly values pieces in which the artisan has allowed a rare stone to speak for itself rather than overwhelming it with decoration. With gaspeite becoming exceptionally difficult to source, this is a singular piece—part jewelry, part collectible, and a beautiful reminder that some of the most compelling treasures are those that cannot easily be found again.
