Mother of Pearl, White Clam and Heishi Shell Necklace Santo Domingo

Sale price$395.00

Our Mother of Pearl, White Clam and Heishi Shell Necklace Santo Domingo is a luminous example of Kewa craftsmanship, handmade by a wonderful female Santo Domingo artisan. Multiple graceful strands move from finely worked white clam-shell heishi into softly rounded mother-of-pearl beads, punctuated by deep dark accents and an unexpected touch of turquoise. Ivory, pearl, and black jet come together in a composition that is restrained yet extraordinarily expressive—the kind of necklace whose sophistication reveals itself through material, proportion, and the subtle evidence of the human hand.

Mother-of-pearl, or nacre, is the lustrous material that forms along the inner surface of certain mollusk shells. Built from countless microscopic layers, it reflects light with the soft iridescence that gives pearls their characteristic glow. Unlike a pearl, however, mother-of-pearl is fashioned from the shell itself. White clam shell also has a long history in Pueblo jewelry. Shell reached the interior Southwest through extensive trade networks connecting Pueblo communities with distant coastal regions and became an enduring material for adornment. In some Pueblo contexts, shell and turquoise may evoke water—an especially meaningful presence in the arid Southwest—although the significance of an individual piece ultimately belongs to its maker.

Transforming shell into heishi is painstaking work. Small pieces must be cut into blanks, individually drilled, strung, then ground, smoothed, and polished until hundreds of separate elements begin to flow together as one harmonious strand. Here, the luminous irregularity of the mother-of-pearl contrasts beautifully with the more disciplined rhythm of the fine clam-shell beads. Tiny differences in shape, sheen, and surface are not imperfections; they are the signatures of natural material shaped patiently by hand.

Jean Marie continues to seek out this artisan’s work because it combines technical mastery with a deeply personal sensibility. Their relationship has grown over years of friendship and patronage, and Jean Marie especially values the limited number of labor-intensive pieces the artist creates. This necklace is wearable art transformed into something deeply personal and meant to be passed forward.
