Natural Melon and Heishi Shell Graduated Disc Necklace Santo Domingo
Our Melon Shell Graduated Disc Necklace Santo Domingo is an extraordinary and monumental example of how a seemingly simple natural material can become sculptural in the hands of a gifted female Kewa artisan. Handmade by the same accomplished artist whose work has been exhibited at the National Museum of the American Indian in New York, the necklace is composed of hundreds of warm melon-shell discs, meticulously graduated from delicate beads at the neckline to broad, dramatic discs at the center. Cream, ivory, honey, caramel, and soft brown move naturally through the strand, with every subtle variation belonging to the shell itself. Each disc is separated by a tiny brown heishi shell.
Shell has been central to Pueblo jewelry traditions for generations, and melon shell is particularly beautiful for the warmth and organic variation revealed once it is cut and polished. The apparent simplicity of these discs disguises an enormous amount of handwork. Each must be individually cut from shell, drilled through its center, ground, smoothed, and polished. Because shell naturally varies in thickness, curvature, and coloration, creating such a long, beautifully graduated progression requires not only technical precision but an artist’s eye for proportion and balance.
What immediately distinguishes this necklace is its graduation. The artisan has carefully arranged the discs so they increase almost imperceptibly in scale from 4mm - 20 mm as they approach the center, producing a wonderfully architectural silhouette. The larger discs retain slight differences in contour and thickness, allowing them to move independently and giving the necklace a soft, rhythmic quality when worn. Those variations are not imperfections; they are evidence of the human hand and part of what makes a completely handmade piece impossible to reproduce exactly.
Jean Marie continues to seek out this artisan’s limited creations because of their deeply individual character and her unique approach to jewelry making, each piece she says is infused with the spirit of her mother and grandmother who taught her to make these museum quality pieces. Jean Marie has developed a close relationship with her and makes a point of patronizing her work, appreciating the patience and personal expression behind each creation.
Elegant worn alone against a simple tunic or kaftan, this one-of-a-kind necklace transforms humble shell into wearable sculpture—quietly sophisticated, beautifully tactile, and unmistakably made by hand.
