Howrah Embroidered Kantha Coat One of a Kind

Sale price$695.00

Jean Marie Clarke has always been drawn to textiles that carry the quiet imprint of time and the unmistakable beauty of the human hand. This exceptional Kantha coat began its life as a vintage quilt, personally selected by Jean Marie during her search for rare and storied textiles. Each quilt she chooses has already lived a life, stitched, used, and treasured, and is then thoughtfully transformed into a wearable work of art. Because every quilt is entirely unique, no two coats can ever be the same. Once a quilt is chosen and cut, the piece becomes singular, an unrepeatable expression of craftsmanship and history.

Kantha is one of the oldest and most poetic textile traditions of the Indian subcontinent, practiced by women for centuries, many historians trace its origins back well over a thousand years. Traditionally, women layered worn cotton saris and fabrics and stitched them together with a simple running stitch, creating quilts for their families. These stitches were often worked slowly over months or even years, passed between generations of mothers and daughters. The beauty of Kantha lies in this quiet devotion: the visible hand stitching, the gentle rippling of the cloth, and the sense that every inch carries the story of the woman who made it. Today, artisans continue this centuries-old tradition, and by transforming these historic textiles into garments we help preserve a remarkable cultural heritage while supporting the women who keep the craft alive.

This particular coat is especially remarkable within the Pax Philomena collection. In addition to the intricate Kantha stitching that moves across the surface like delicate topography, the quilt Jean Marie discovered also features beautifully embroidered motifs, something we have never before offered in our Kantha coats. The luminous palette of turquoise, saffron gold, olive, and touches of crimson gives the piece extraordinary depth and vitality. These colors happen to pair beautifully with our Native American turquoise jewelry collection, creating a striking harmony when worn together. The coat is fully reversible, offering two distinct looks depending on which side you choose to wear, and features an easy silhouette with practical pockets on one side.

Crafted from 100% cotton, this piece is lightweight, breathable, and machine washable on delicate, making it as practical as it is extraordinary. Yet at its heart, this coat is an heirloom, a textile that carries centuries of tradition and the spirit of the women who created it. Jean Marie’s careful selection of the quilt makes this piece truly special, and because only one exists, it will never be repeated. It is the kind of garment that draws admiration wherever it is worn, a true collector’s piece destined to become part of the wearer’s own story.
