Rare Vintage Brown Heishi Shell Graduated Necklace Santo Domingo

Sale price$395.00

Our Vintage Brown Heishi Shell Necklace is an exceptionally rare and highly sophisticated example of Santo Domingo (Kewa) Pueblo artistry, the kind of piece that immediately speaks to collectors and those with a discerning eye for Native jewelry. Jean Marie discovered this necklace during her travels across the American Southwest, and in more than thirty years of collecting and working with Native jewelry, she has never encountered another heishi strand quite like it.

What makes this necklace so extraordinary is its singular palette. Rather than the more commonly seen white shell or brightly contrasted turquoise combinations, this piece is composed almost entirely of richly toned brown shell heishi, ranging from deep espresso and tobacco hues to warm caramel and smoky earth tones. These darker shell colorations were occasionally explored by Santo Domingo artisans during the 1960s and 1970s, a period when artists began experimenting more boldly with natural materials, subtle tonal gradations, and more modernist compositions. Even within that era, necklaces executed entirely in these deep brown shades remained highly unusual, as suitable shell material in these tones was far more difficult to source and match consistently.

Each bead has been painstakingly hand-cut, hand-drilled, and polished in the centuries-old heishi tradition. The beautifully graduated design, with the beads becoming slightly larger toward the center, creates a graceful balance and gives the necklace an elegant, sculptural feel when worn. Sitting at a refined choker length, it frames the neckline beautifully and layers effortlessly with silver or turquoise, while remaining striking enough to stand entirely on its own.

Heishi, which means “shell” in the Keres language, is among the oldest jewelry traditions in North America, with origins stretching back centuries among the Pueblo peoples. The process is remarkably labor intensive, requiring immense patience and precision to create these perfectly balanced strands. Authentic vintage heishi of this quality has become increasingly difficult to find, particularly examples with such unusual coloration and such a beautifully cohesive flow.

There is an unmistakable sophistication and soul to this necklace. Its rich earth-toned palette feels timeless and deeply personal, carrying with it the beauty of another era and the hands that patiently shaped every bead. To wear a piece like this is to wear a fragment of history, an untold story gathered somewhere across the mesas and trading routes of the American Southwest. Rare pieces like this do far more than accessorize, they carry memory, heritage, and a sense of connection that can never be replicated.
