Gangtok Green Maxi kaftan Dress Natural Dyes
The Gangtok Green Maxi Kaftan is a beautiful mix of heritage, artistry, and story. Printed in a village in Rajasthan, it has been created using the centuries-old technique of mud block printing, a craft lovingly passed down through generations. The colors come from natural dyes made from the earth itself—pomegranate rind for warm yellows, madder root for reds, indigo leaves for deep blues, and turmeric for glowing golds. These natural hues give the fabric a depth and richness that feels timeless and alive.
Block printing is a slow, thoughtful process. Hand-carved wooden blocks are dipped into dye and stamped onto the cloth with care, one press at a time. With the mud-resist method, artisans use clay to create striking patterns that emerge only after the dyeing is complete. It’s a labor of patience and precision, and no two pieces are ever quite the same. Those small variations are exactly what make each kaftan truly one-of-a-kind.
This maxi kaftan was made by a fourth-generation artisan, a young man who is devoted to carrying forward his family’s ancestral craft. Jean Marie, our founder, knows him, his father, and even his grandfather personally, and supporting his work is part of her passion for keeping traditional textile arts alive. Through his hands, every kaftan becomes more than just clothing—it’s a piece of living history, carrying the resilience and artistry of India into the modern world.
The name Gangtok also carries a personal meaning for our founder, Jean Marie Clarke. Her mother, Philomena, once lived in Gangtok, a town in the lush Himalayan foothills. Jean Marie grew up listening to her mother’s stories of misty mountains, colorful markets, and a life full of culture and beauty. This maxi kaftan reflects that spirit—rooted in tradition yet versatile for today. Its flowing silhouette can be dressed down with sandals for a casual day out or styled with jewelry and heels for an evening gathering. However it’s worn, it’s always a conversation piece that carries both elegance and story and the passion for patronizing artisans!
