Baluko shell has long been treasured by Santo Domingo Pueblo artists for its warm, natural beauty and its connection to both the earth and the life-giving waters from which it comes. The creation of traditional heishi beads is among the oldest jewelry-making traditions in North America and remains one of the most labor-intensive. Every shell is carefully cut into tiny discs, drilled, hand-strung, and meticulously ground until each bead fits seamlessly with the next.
