Kovalam Cotton Kantha Coat One of a Kind
The Kovalam Kantha Coat is a singular piece of wearable textile art, created from a vintage kantha quilt personally chosen by our founder, Jean Marie, for its exceptional color, composition and character. There is only one.
The story of kantha stretches back centuries in Bengal, where women developed an ingenious way of preserving cloth that had become too precious to discard. Worn saris and other cotton textiles were layered together and covered with rows of tiny running stitches, giving fragments of fabric a new life. Created within the home and passed from one generation to another, these kanthas became deeply personal expressions of the women who made them, their surfaces recording both extraordinary handwork and the history of the cloth itself.
Long before the terms upcycling and slow fashion entered our vocabulary, these women understood something we are only now rediscovering: beautiful materials should be valued, preserved and transformed rather than thrown away.
That philosophy lies at the heart of our Kantha collection.
Jean Marie personally selected the vintage quilt from which the Kovalam was created, drawn to its remarkable handwork and wonderfully unexpected composition. The quilt was then thoughtfully fashioned into a coat while preserving the individuality of the original textile. Nothing about it could be precisely repeated, because no two vintage kanthas—and no two sections within them—are ever exactly alike.
Completely reversible, the Kovalam reveals an entirely different character when turned inside out. It is quite literally two coats in one, with pockets on both sides, yet the beauty goes far beyond its versatility. Every change of pattern, every tiny stitch and every subtle trace of the fabric’s earlier life belongs to its provenance.
This is slow fashion at its very best: an existing textile, already imbued with countless hours of women’s handwork, upcycled rather than discarded and transformed into something relevant for another generation. At a time when textile production and discarded clothing place an enormous burden on the environment, there is something both luxurious and profoundly modern about choosing to work with what already exists.
The Kovalam celebrates the resourcefulness of the women who created the original kantha, the beauty of handwork and Jean Marie’s belief that exceptional textiles deserve to be discovered, preserved and given another life.
It is not simply inspired by the past. It carries the past within it, and because this coat was cut from one particular vintage kantha, there can never be another Kovalam exactly like it. One quilt. One coat. One of a kind.
