Jean Marie has collected since the age of nine, when she visited her first trading post on the Navajo Nation with her mother, Philomena—an experience that shaped a lifelong reverence for Native American artistry and culture. From that early moment, a deep appreciation took hold, guiding her eye and her passion for extraordinary pieces such as this remarkable Navajo cluster pin.

Discovered during her travels across the American Southwest, this piece immediately stood apart—not only for its beauty, but for its scale. Pins measuring three inches or larger have become increasingly scarce, making this one an exceptional and highly collectible find.

Composed of an impressive 77 hand-set stones, most likely Kingman turquoise, this pin embodies the bold, sculptural aesthetic that has defined Navajo silversmithing for generations. Kingman turquoise, sourced from one of the most historic mines in Arizona, is prized for its vivid color and enduring quality. In Navajo belief, turquoise is far more than a beautiful stone—it is considered a sacred element of life, offering protection, strength, and a connection between the earth and sky. It is often worn as a safeguard for the wearer, carrying both spiritual and cultural significance.

The tradition of Navajo silversmithing dates back to the 19th century, when artisans began shaping silver by hand and pairing it with turquoise to create pieces that expressed identity, status, and meaning. The result is jewelry that transcends adornment, carrying heritage and intention in every detail.

Cluster pins such as this one hold a particularly meaningful place within that tradition. Often referred to as “grandmother pins,” these designs are believed to represent the matriarch at the center, with surrounding stones symbolizing family radiating outward—a reflection of the Navajo’s matrilineal society, where lineage and legacy pass through the women. It is a design that speaks to strength, continuity, and the enduring role of women within the community.

There is an unmistakable presence to this piece—the harmony of its concentric design, the richness of the turquoise, and the substantial weight of the silverwork. It feels storied, as though it has already been cherished and worn with purpose, carrying its legacy forward to the next collector.

Jean Marie favors wearing pieces like this as pendants, allowing them to take center stage. It is a true statement in every sense—bold, refined, and impossible to overlook.

This is a one-of-a-kind find, and examples of this scale and character are very rare.
