Our Manisha Mandarin Maxi Kaftan Dress begins with one of the most extraordinary fabrics we produce. Exceptionally soft cotton voile is first meticulously pin tucked by hand, creating hundreds of fine vertical folds across the cloth. Skilled artisans then discharge block print the tiny floral motif by hand over this textured surface, carefully positioning the carved wooden blocks one impression at a time. Printing such a precise micro-floral pattern over pin-tucked fabric is exceptionally difficult and requires remarkable skill, patience, and experience.

Manisha also holds a very special place in the history of Pax Philomena. This distinctive micro-floral is the first print Jean Marie chooses when she begins the collection, appearing on the original Manisha Tunic. Years later, it remains one of our most recognizable textiles and one of the most difficult to produce. It takes us two years to obtain this fabric again, and because so few artisans possess the skills required to create it, we can never be certain when—or whether—we will be able to have it made again.

The result is a textile with wonderful dimension and character. The fine pin tucks create subtle vertical lines that give the lightweight cotton additional body while allowing this dress to remain soft and fluid. Against the brilliant mandarin-orange ground, the delicate floral motif has an almost jewel-like intricacy that becomes even more apparent when seen up close.
