Our Feng Shui Fish Maxi Kaftan Dress is a meditation on flow, prosperity, and rare craftsmanship — a limited edition piece created for the woman who understands that clothing can carry intention, history, and energy within its threads.

This extraordinary textile was personally sourced in India by our founder, Jean Marie, after a deliberate search for one of the country’s most skilled and quietly exceptional block-printing houses. Tucked away in a historic desert region long revered by textile scholars, this workshop is something of a hidden gem — not widely commercial, not mass-producing for export, but preserving techniques that have endured for more than four centuries. Jean Marie sought them out specifically for their mastery of natural dyes and traditional mud-resist printing, knowing that very few printers still work at this level of integrity.

Natural dye block printing in this region dates back to the 16th and 17th centuries, when artisan communities developed sophisticated methods of extracting color from the earth itself — indigo from fermented leaves, reds from madder root and alizarin, blacks from iron and jaggery solutions, ochres and golds from pomegranate rind and mineral blends. The process is both scientific and intuitive. Wooden blocks are hand-carved, then pressed rhythmically onto cloth prepared with clay and botanical mordants. The fabric is sun-dried between stages, washed in running water, and often reprinted multiple times to build depth and permanence of color.

Unlike synthetic dyes that sit harshly on the surface, natural pigments bond with the fiber, creating tones that feel alive — nuanced, softened, and deeply dimensional. The black in this piece is achieved through traditional iron fermentation, a technique requiring weeks of preparation. The cinnabar and warm gold tones emerge through layered botanical dye baths, each stage demanding patience and environmental awareness. Climate, water quality, and timing all influence the final result. Subtle variations are not imperfections; they are the signature of a living craft.

The fish motif carries powerful symbolism in Feng Shui, representing abundance, prosperity, renewal, and the ability to move gracefully through life’s currents. Across cultures, fish symbolize wealth and forward momentum — an auspicious emblem for those who believe that intention shapes experience. Jean Marie was drawn to this motif not only for its visual rhythm, but for the positive energy it evokes — a current of abundance rendered in cloth.

Produced in extremely limited quantity, this kaftan is more than a garment. It is the result of a journey — of seeking out rare skill, honoring ancestral knowledge, and choosing process over speed. A wearable work of art rooted in centuries of tradition, created to be collected and cherished for years to come.
