Hand embroidery has been part of India’s textile language for centuries, with distinct traditions developing from region to region. The process is inherently slow and personal: designs are typically drawn, traced, or transferred onto cloth before artisans build the decoration stitch by stitch, using techniques that can include running, chain, and satin stitches as well as appliqué and other forms of embellishment. It is this work of the human hand—the tiny variations in a line, the placement of a motif, the tension of a stitch, that gives handcrafted textiles their depth and character.
